Evaluation-preliminary task

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

In my preliminary task at the start of the year i was working with Michael Mello, since this i have learnt a lot about how to handle a camera to how to upload footage to how to edit and add effects, the comparison between the quality of alice and the fotage from our american inspired task of 'someone entering a room and having a convocation' is a dramatic difference. In the first task it is very evident that we did not have a clue about rules of the camera such as the 180 degree rule and the nature of angles and frames however, in alice i believe it is a lot more clear that i understand how to handle the camera in order to capture a message or idea that i want to present to the intended audience. i have learnt how to represent personality from how a protagonist is centered in a frame but also through close-up or long shots to create or highlight an importance aspect.

Evaluation- What we have learnt?

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Due to our lack of knowledge we had before starting the course i think we have managed to aculeate a bundle of new skills and learnt much more about the equipment that we are using.  As we first struggled with film due to that fact we had a disadvantage with a faulty camera we then managed to re film and create the footage we wanted. When we got to the editing stage we managed to add soundtrack cut and post together a myriad of clips to create our high speed mix of short snaps. we have overall expanded our knowledge on the subject and now feel confident in using final cut.

Evaluation - attract and addressing audience

How did you attract/address your audience?

We first addressed and attracted our audience by our ident as this is the first thing the audience are met with. I think our ident doesnt give much away but due to the background message of how the light turns on in the lamppost i think it makes people feel quite upbeat and happy, which should hopefully create a positive tone. Then upbeat music interacts with the audience hopefully carry this feeling on. Through the process of getting ready it will immediately capture the female audience, however the memory that appears frequently interrupting the initial idea will create a sense of mystery which separates it from any other film, this would hopefully then reach out to the male audience.

Evaluation- challenge conventions

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our opening to our film hopefully grasps the codes and conventions of a typical superhero film with elements such like the motif of producing a super suit or outfit, I believe this is the main feature of capturing the appearance of a character but its also the symbol of what a superhero stands for. We were influenced by the short sequence in the original cat women when the audience is confronted with her making her costume. Another way that we have hopefully portrayed aspects of a classic superhero is through a dramatic and mysterious accident that would display or create there individual magical skill or super power. We conveyed this by showing short frame with infer that she has been hit by a bus but is perfectly fine which would deduce the fact that she contain ‘super human strength’ feeling no physical pain.

Evaluation- what media institution?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

From gathering our audience research and planning our film in general we have come to the conclusion that our film type and audience would most likely be distributed by a high end instruction such as the Hollywood conglomerates, this would be down to the fact that we are aiming for a young lively audience both male and female but could also capture a cult following due to our high profile use of ‘superhero films’. Our film hopefully would be a big block burster as it follows the typical conventions of what i believe appears on the big screen. Our end film we imagine would have contained elements action, adventure, mystery, sci-fi and a touch of romance which would make it appreciate to all genders. The film couple of minutes, our opening, does portray a very light heart girly girl sequence however it does end which a sense of mastery to what is going on... i also believe that the use of inventing a new super heroin will generate some excitement if it was to be put forward to a Hollywood audience, it could quite easily inspire young girls as it has that power to women feel.  It could also create merchant dice and advertising as it is linked with a superhero following.

Evaluation - social groups

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

What is a social groups?  A social group has been defined as two or more humans who interact with one another, share similar characteristics and collectively have a sense of unity. Although our opening to our film does not necessary represent particular social groups in an obvious way as it is difficult to present this due to our one protagonist and static movement, it does show a difference in behaviour and appearance in the dynamic difference between the sides of Alice/Lacie. Focusing on the definition our film resembles this by how they are the same person but convey opposite characteristics which eventually become similar as the plot line alternately  concludes with Alices both sides coming together as one, a unit. Alice conveys a typical intellectual young girl with a normal girly girl room and distinctive characteristics however, Laice portrays a very hyperbolic ability of feeling no physical pain, she comes across as being popular and very strong and powerful. Although our short sequence only presents two setting both displaying a sense of social interest and representative elements. Firstly, Alice’s room is filled with suttle clues and hint to the plot later on in the film, with the distinguishing use of the colour red which highlights the idea of caution or danger is is juxtaposed with the colour white shown in the opening which could show the vulnerability towards that forthcoming risk. However, the memory that is revisited infers the emblematic current society of ‘walking with her ear phones in oblivious to the world’, which results in an accident.

Certification

we decided that out film would fall into a 12A certification due to the fact that our film does not go above but does match the guidelines put up by the british board of film classification :

Suitable for 12 years and over
Exactly the same criteria are used to classify works at ‘12A’ and ‘12’. These categories are awarded where the material is suitable, in general, only for those aged 12 and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them.
The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult, and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take a younger child if, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult.
The ‘12’ category exists only for video works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video work.

Discrimination

Discriminatory language or behaviour must not be endorsed by the work as a whole. Aggressive discriminatory language or behaviour is unlikely to be acceptable unless clearly condemned.

Drugs

Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or give instructional detail.

Horror

Moderate physical and psychological threat may be permitted, provided disturbing sequences are not frequent or sustained.

Imitable behaviour

Dangerous behaviour (for example, hanging, suicide and self-harming) should not dwell on detail which could be copied, or appear pain or harm free.  Easily accessible weapons should not be glamorised.

Language

Moderate language is allowed. The use of strong language must be infrequent.

Nudity

Nudity is allowed, but in a sexual context must be brief and discreet.

Sex

Sexual activity may be briefly and discreetly portrayed. Sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. Frequent crude references are unlikely to be acceptable.

Theme

Mature themes are acceptable, but their treatment must be suitable for young teenagers.

Violence

Moderate violence is allowed but should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by the context. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly and discreetly indicated, and must have a strong contextual justification.

Soundtrack

Ideas for soundtrack:
Due to our light heart film we wanted a fairy happy tone, one that would fit our genre and story-line but also give little clue to the rest of the film, we looked at many different types of soundtracks:

  1. soundtrack to Rhianna 'murder'
  2. soundtrack to Taylor Swift 'way i loved you'
  3. but settled on the soundtrack to Miley Cyrus 'Party in the USA'

photo-shoot

In order to establish our main protagonists we took a series of photos of both 'Alice And Lacie'

This evidently expresses not only our characters change but personality, costume ad makeup used when filming.

Our Superhero

How women Super-heroin's are portrayed :

We then decided that the majority of these films have a male as their main protagonist, so we decided to challenge this and look at heroines as there is very few.

Cat woman:
Pitof's 2004 action, fantasy superhero film  stars A shy woman [Halle Berry] endowed with the speed, reflexes, and senses of a cat, walks a thin line between criminal and hero, even as a detective doggedly pursues her, fascinated by both of her personas.
She challenges the male hero image and with a combination of femininity, women strength and power, it gave us an idea of making a main protagonist a female too, however, by using the typically 'girly girl' stereotype masking her secret weapons and heroin abilities.

This was our initial idea, but then one we saw a few female superhero films, it proved that women were shown in a negative and objective way, with the lack of clothing or tight clothes, the use of actors and there slender figure, but also through there speech and what they generally stand for. We did not like the idea of putting women in a light that reflects them to be a procession, with the only power of their sex-appeal.

Our idea then changed as we didn’t want fall into following the general conventions of a male or female superhero film, but still follow the codes so it is still seen as a superhero film. It seemed like a good idea to use this film to give women another power besides seduction. We wanted to present all the other qualities that a female superhero could have like a strong opinion and voice, intelligence and creative.
